Curriculum Expectations
The Saline Area Schools sets extremely high standards and expectations for all students. The District has adopted a District Strategic Framework that helps guide the development of our students into the 21st century and beyond.
Further, SAS has developed the Saline Area Schools Compass / Learner Profile. This serves to outline the important skills we expect our students to demonstrate by the time they graduate from Saline High School or Saline Alternative High School.

Seventh graders will continue to work on both fiction and nonfiction strategies for reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing.
Writing Workshop: Students will write regularly in class. Class work will emphasize the writing process, focusing heavily on revision with the goal of enhancing students’ abilities to evaluate and improve their own writing. Students will complete approximately three genre-based writing units - memoir, informational, and argumentative - working through multiple drafts to a published final. A variety of experimental drafting, during which students draft but don’t necessarily publish, will occur throughout the year as well. Reading Workshop: Seventh graders will work on both fiction and nonfiction reading strategies and are expected to independently read both in and out of school throughout the year. All students are expected to have a reading text with them daily, as sustained silent reading is incorporated throughout the week via class time. Students will be asked to respond to their reading regularly, through class discussion, written responses, and teacher conferences. The 7th grade reading program will follow the Reader’s Workshop model to individualize instruction. Our program is based in part off the work done by Lucy Calkins and the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project in New York City. http://tc.readingandwritingproject.com/ Spelling, Grammar, Mechanics: All students will work toward improving their spelling, grammar, and mechanics. Mini-lessons and practice exercises will be provided based on student needs. Deliberate and careful attention to spelling, grammar and mechanics is expected at appropriate times; students will be pushed to become effective editors of their own work. Listening, Viewing, Speaking: As a part of language arts, all students are expected to be able to engage effectively in listening, viewing, and speaking experiences. These experiences will be blended into the writing and reading units in order to keep the activities fluid and authentic. |
